Lawrence Talbot (Benicio del Toro), a renowned Shakespearean actor, is touring London and races to the family's estate in Blackmoor after being informed of his brother's death. He has been estranged from his family for many years since his father, Sir John Talbot (Anthony Hopkins) sent him to an insane asylum after witnessing his mother's mysterious death. Lawrence promises Gwen (Emily Blunt), his brother's widow, that he will investigate his brother's death. Lawrence goes to the gypsy camp on the night of a full moon looking for clues of the murder. A superhumanly strong wolf-like creature descends on the camp, slaughtering many people. Lawrence is attacked by the creature, who bites him on the shoulder before being chased off by the armed townspeople. Lawrence soon becomes a werewolf and learns of his curse. On the search for the truth, he's trailed by the suspicion-filled Inspector Francis Aberline (Hugo Weaving) who decided to take on the case of the mysterious murders. Through a treacherous and obstacle filled series of events, it is later revealed to him that his mother did not kill herself, but instead his father (who, too, is a werewolf) gruesomely slaughtered her in full view of his past self. On the next full moon, Lawrence transforms into a werewolf and attacks a party of hunters; the following morning, his father assists the authorities in the apprehension of Lawrence and they take him to the secluded asylum in London. After a violent escape from the 'prison', he is assisted by Gwen, whom he shares both his secret and feelings for in a passionate kiss. As night falls, he confronts his father in a large mansion, where both the inspector and Gwen follow him into. Before the hideouts are able to enter, both father and son transform, battling out the overdue feud of their lifetime; after some time, John is beheaded by Lawrence, but Aberline bursts through the door, wielding a gun and aims it at the distraught werewolf, and at the last second, Gwen pushes the gun out of the line of fire (and steals it), also getting the inspector bit in the process. After getting chased by Lawrence, Gwen ends up on her back, pinned down near a steep drop by the snarling wolfman; she finds the tenderness within him long enough to distract him and shoot him through the heart. With a slump into her arms, he shifts back into his human form and with a last breath, mutters, "Thank you". A crowd of people rush up with Inspector Aberline in front, still bleeding from the bite and holding the silver cane that Talbot once owned.

In 1954, U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), go to the Ashecliff Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island. They are investigating the disappearance of Rachel Solando, a patient said to have vanished from a locked room. Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), the head psychiatrist, explains that Rachel was institutionalized after drowning her three children.
During the search for Rachel, Teddy sees a lighthouse but he is told it has already been searched. The Marshals question the staff and learn that Rachel's psychiatrist, Dr. Sheehan, left for vacation that morning. Teddy asks to see the hospital personnel files but Cawley refuses. That night, Teddy has strange dreams about his wife, Dolores Chanal (Michelle Williams), who had died in a fire two years before. During this dream, she tells Teddy that Rachel is still on the island, as is Andrew Laeddis, the man who started the fire in which she died.
In the morning, they interview patients from Rachel's group therapy sessions, one of whom, after creating a diversion for Chuck, passes Teddy a warning to run. Later that day, Teddy explains to Chuck the real reason why he took the case: after being transferred to Ashecliff, Andrew Laeddis disappeared, so he took on himself to investigate the institution. During Teddy's investigation, he met George Noyce, a former patient who claimed that the institution was performing experiments on humans, so Teddy sets out to bring it down.

Synopsis: The world is in ruins after some apocalyptic event. A father and his son are walking towards the coast in an attempt to head south to escape the increasingly cold, endless winter. Along the way they have to avoid gangs forced into cannibalism. Their only weapon is a pistol with 2 shots. The father has dreams about his wife, who committed suicide before the story begins. At one point they find an intact bomb shelter filled with food and supplies. Rather than remain in this sanctuary, they continue on because they have not yet reached the coast. The only named character they encounter in the entire book is an old man who says his name is Ely. Ely is harmless and alone and they share a meal and talk for a bit. They find out Ely is not his real name and he created this false name in order to keep from being found by other refugees. They eventually part ways. The whole journey is a struggle to survive in a world no longer capable of sustaining life. They almost lose this struggle when a thief makes off with all their worldly possessions, and the Father nearly loses his struggle to hold on to his humanity in taking those possessions back. The boy is all that keeps him barely human. The boy is his warrant, in his own words. In the end, they reach the coast but find it is no different, no better than the place they left behind. The father finally succumbs to the illness that has plagued him from the beginning, dying and leaving the boy alone. But he is not alone for long before another finds him, another man holding on to his humanity -- only he's been a little more successful because he had help. Now the boy has a family.
